Ray Wiggs is an American artist/painter living and working in Provincetown, MA. He was born in 1957 in South Florida, where he spent most of his youth. His involvement in art began at an early age, which he credits to the encouragement of his family. Wiggs went on to study at L’Accademia delle Belle Arti, in Perugia, Italy.
The focus of his work is diverse and includes landscapes, marine-scapes, as well as the figure. The artist incorporates what he refers to as “manipulated realism.” He utilizes two formats in his work. With some paintings he uses the traditional single canvas or panel. In other works he incorporates multiple canvases affixed as one into a more sculptural format. His overall objective is to engage the viewer in a world all their own in which the observer is allowed to explore and imagine.
Working in oils (with a restrained palette) he builds the paint up in luminous colors. Pigment is applied in numerous layers of glazes promoting an inner radiance emanating from within, thus imbuing the picture plane with considerable depth and allure. The artist holds firmly to the conventions of traditional painting, yet explores the emotional impact of image and format. His paintings are collected by a broad segment of society, and included in both corporate as well as private collections.
